MUSIC AT MSJ

Mount St. Joseph Academy's Music students learn musical instrument and/or work to improve their singing skills. Students do not need any prior training to join music class, though all students will be held to the same standards.

Concert Band

The MSJ concert band is the most comprehensive band in the area.  While most bands include woodwind, brass, and percussion, the MSJ concert band also includes string instruments. As part of this program, students learn to read music and to express its emotional content.

Students may join concert band if they can play or want to learn to play any of the following instruments:

  • Woodwinds: flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto, tenor, or baritone saxophone

  • Brass: trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba

  • Strings: guitar, bass guitar, violin, viola, cello, bass

  • Percussion: piano, drum set, mallet percussion, and auxiliary percussion

Woodwind, brass, orchestral strings, and percussion students have the opportunities to attend the Music District Festival, All State Festival, and more.

Rock Band

Rock Band is a student-run ensemble. Students who have an interest in school appropriate rock tunes, who can play guitar, bass guitar, drum set, piano, or can sing are eligible for this group.

All music is chosen by the students with teacher approval. Students learn how to construct a song and how to self-correct using their musical knowledge.

Choir

The MSJ choir students learn to read music, to express the emotional content, and balance in three- or four-part harmony. Vocal students have the opportunity to go to the Music District Festival, All State Festival, and many more.
