Sciences
College Preparatory and Honors level coursework in the sciences is designed to prepare Academy students for further study in the life sciences. With an emphasis on the scientific method in all laboratory activities, students put the ‘hands’ in hands-on learning studying topics that include heredity, evolution, structure and function of the human body, and ecology as well as chemistry, physics, anatomy, physiology, and environmental science.
Science students are required to participate in the annual science fair at the end of the third marking period as well as participate in science lab. Honors level study challenges students preparing for post-secondary study and includes basic biochemistry—study of the cell, reproduction, photosynthesis, respiration, heredity, genetics, evolution, and classification—and chemistry. At the Honors level, laboratory report writing is developed in-depth and participation is required during all scheduled laboratory periods. Students wishing to pursue Honors or Advanced Placement science studies must have the recommendation of their teacher as well as an appropriate score on their placement test.
